Could You Survive Midsomer?

by Simon Brew

SYNOPSIS CAN YOU AVOID A BIZARRE DEATH IN ENGLAND’S MOST DANGEROUS COUNTY?

All is not well in the beautiful county of Midsomer. On the eve of its first Villages In Bloom competition, a man lies slain, smelling of damson jam. Who could have done it? Well, that's where you come in. Step into the shoes of Midsomer CID's newest recruit, choose your own path and decide which way the story goes.

Could You Survive Midsomer? sets off on an engaging pick-your-own adventure format to challenge the reader to solve a crime or succumb to the county's suspiciously high death rate. Set in television’s most celebrated and murderous county, the book allows readers to see if they can get to the bottom of the mystery and bring the perpetrator to justice, avoiding an untimely, and possibly bizarre death, along the way. Your task is to make the right choices, solve the case and – most tricky of all – stay alive!

REVIEW

Could you Survive Midsomer is a 'choose your own adventure' style novel and as soon as I saw it, I knew I would love playing detective. When I was younger I used to love reading these kinds of books and would spend days going over and over the same stories but choosing different options each time to get a different outcome. I can now safely say that it is still as fun now as it was for me many years ago! A cross between reading a detective novel and playing a murder mystery game, the interactive elements really made it entertaining to read through and gave another layer to the mystery!

It's difficult to comment too much on the story itself as depending on the choices you make throughout the book, everyone will have a slightly different reader experience. The one thing I can definitely say is that this is cozy crime with a twist and it was a joy to read.

As a big Crime Thriller fan, I also watch a lot of detective TV shows and do like to watch Midsomer Murders every now and then. I wouldn't say I was completely obsessed with the show but it didn't make any difference at all to my enjoyment of the book. Big fans of the show will obviously love the references and chance to take part in solving a mystery set in this dangerous county - but this book is also perfect for crime and murder mystery fans in general and would make a fantastic gift for any budding amateur detectives!
