How to Kill Your Best Friend

by Lexie Elliott

SYNOPSIS

The perfect getaway - to get away with murder...

Georgie, Lissa and Bronwyn have been best friends since they met on their college swimming team. Now Lissa is dead - drowned off the coast of the remote island where her second husband owns a luxury resort. But could a star open-water swimmer really have drowned? Or is something more sinister going on?

Brought together for Lissa's memorial, Georgie, Bron, Lissa's grieving husband and their friends find themselves questioning the circumstances around Lissa's death - and each other. As the weather turns ominous, trapping the guests on the island, it slowly dawns on them that Lissa's death was only the beginning. Nobody knows who they can trust. Or if they'll make it off the island alive...

REVIEW

Bronwyn, Georgie, Adam, Duncan, and Jem are all staying on a tropical island resort (run by Jem) for a memorial service for their friend Lissa (Jem's wife) who is believed dead after drowning one night after swimming alone in Kanu Cove. However, Georgie is suspicious. Lissa was a strong swimmer (they all met because they competed for their college swim team) and she starts asking a lot of questions about the events leading up to, and surrounding Lissa's disappearance.

Slowly, she begins to suspect that this was actually murder - threatening messages, near misses and sabotage to the resorts' business account points towards one of their group being involved. But could one of them really be capable of killing their best friend?

Today is a very appropriate day to be reviewing this scorching hot summer thriller! Secrets, sun and suspense ran throughout the story and the short punchy chapters, alternating between characters, made it impossible to put down. I loved the way the characters history and stories built up to reveal more and more secrets from the past, and the unexpected twists make this book the perfect murder mystery holiday read.

For crime fans - my favourite part of this book were the chapters that looked at all of the different methods you could use to kill your best friend and how they might have fit into this story. A really amusing addition to a more typical crime thriller!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lexie Elliott has been writing for as long as she can remember, but she began to focus on it more seriously after she lost her banking job in 2009 due to the Global Financial Crisis. After some success in short story competitions, she began planning a novel. With two kids and a (new) job, it took some time for that novel to move from her head to the page, but the result was The French Girl, which was published by Berkley in February 2018 - available on Amazon now! This was followed by The Missing Years in 2019 and How To Kill Your Best Friend in 2021. She is now working on her fourth novel.

When she's not writing, Lexie can be found running, swimming or cycling whilst thinking about writing. In 2007 she swam the English Channel solo. She won't be doing that again. In 2015 she ran 100km, raising money for Alzheimer Scotland. She won't be doing that again either. But the odd triathlon or marathon isn't out of the question.
