REVIEW
Two and a half years after the disappearance of Cate and Aiden Gascoigne, Cate’s parents are desperate for closure and call on David Raker to investigate on their behalf. The happy couple were spotted on CCTV in their car, only moments before the car plunged down into a 90-foot ravine and burst into flames. Witnesses confirmed this apparently tragic accident to the Police, but, when the fire crew arrived at the scene, there were no bodies inside. Despite the fact that they should never have been able to survive the crash, there were plenty of theories about what might have happened to Cate and Aiden, yet the Mystery of Gatton Hill remained unsolved.
When Raker begins to investigate, he discovers links to an older unsolved murder investigation led by DI Makayla Jennings, and finds himself pulled into the intricate and disturbing path of a serial killer who has no intention of being caught. In immediate danger, can Raker uncover the truth before the killer stops him?
If you’ve been following my reviews for a while now, you’ll know that I am a huge fan of the David Raker series, but I honestly think that this is the best to date. The complex and intriguing case of the missing couple, Cate and Aiden Gascoigne, had me completely stumped. I actually stopped reading after Raker’s walkthrough of their last sighting before the crash, racking my brains trying to come up with any possible solutions for their disappearance, but didn’t get anywhere close!
There is just something about this series - the pace of the stories, the mystery and complexity of the cases and the brilliant protagonist David Raker that makes these books so addictive to read - I just can't fault them!
The Blackbird can be read out of series, but for Raker fans there is the added element of the continuing Colm Healy storyline, and also a tie-in with Tim Weaver’s standalone novel Missing Pieces which you can read my review for here - https://amandallwyd.wixsite.com/thebutlerdidit/post/missing-pieces
Any crime thriller fans who love to play detective and try to crack the case before the characters in the book - I challenge you to solve this one! A fantastically dark and intense addition to the David Raker series - 5 stars all round!
